The Value of Salt

Scripture:  Matthew 5:13 - You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Salt was an essential item in Palestine during the first century, because the climate was hot. Without refrigeration, salt was the practical means of preserving food.  Jesus used the metaphor of salt and light in Matthew 5:13-14 – that should be seen in a Christian’s character in order to make a difference in a dark and sinful world.
Quality and value of salt:

(1 )  Salt is for seasoning.  It illustrates the quality that should be found in God’s people.  If seasoning has no flavor, it has no value.  If Christians do not influence the people around them, they are useless to God’s purpose for their lives.  As Christians we should not blend in with the world – regarding the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.  (I John 2:15) Instead, we should make an impact in others’ lives – just as seasoning brings out the best flavor in food.

(2 )  Salt preserves food.  We as God’s people are to preserve (to keep people safe from harm/injury/ protect/spare people from going to hell.  We are to share the love of Jesus with them.  When they believe in Him for salvation, they will become the salt of the earth.

(3 )  Remember, we are the salt of the earth.  In Leviticus 2:13 the offerings were seasoned with salt as a reminder of the peoples’ covenant with God.  Salt is a symbol of God working in a person’s life because salt penetrates, preserves and heals.  God wants to be active in our lives.  We should yield our lives to Him daily so that He can be a part of our every day decisions.  We should ask the Lord to penetrate every aspect of our lives – preserving us from all of the evil around us and to heal us from our sins and shortcomings.

Let the salt you use each day remind you that you are one of God’s covenanted people who actively help preserve peoples’ lives and purify their hearts with the word of Jesus Christ – which calls us to be the salt and light with an unwavering commitment to God’s kingdom.  When we lose this desire to salt the earth with the message of the love of Jesus Christ, we become useless to Him.  How salty are you?

Prayer:  Our Father in Heaven:  I am grateful/thankful for You choosing me and calling me to be the salt and light of the world.  With it comes a great responsibility to live like I am the salt and light to influence others to know You and to have a personal relationship with You – to bring glory and honor to You.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
