Evidence of God

Scripture:  Psalms 19:1 - 2 and 7 -10  -  The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge….The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

God reveals Himself in a two-fold description in this passage of scripture.  Firstly, He reveals Himself through a natural revelation by His creation.  The heavens are telling the glory of God – declaring the work of His hand.  Every days, day to day, pours forth speech, and night after night reveals God’s knowledge --  as testimony and a manifestation of the glory of God --  to the existence of God to His eternal power and Godhead (Romans 1:18-20).  The word of God says because that which may be known of God is manifested on them for God hath showed it unto them, so that they are without excuse.  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.  A fool has said in his heart there is no God (Psalms 14:1).  To all who reject the word of God and refuse to believe God’s truth and to live by God’s truth and to speak direct defiance against God and His word, they are very foolish.  God reveals Himself in a two-fold description in this passage of scripture.  Secondly, God reveals Himself  through the word of God, which is described in this passage of scripture.  It is a six-fold description of God’s special revelation (Psalms 19:7-9)

•        (Verse 7)  God’s law (His word), His teaching or instruction for us as believers to obey His standard by which we are to live by. (II Timothy 3:16)  We are to follow His word because His word is perfect for us.  It is designed to help us enjoy life to the fullest.  God’s word saves us and changes us.  It meets the spiritual needs of the soul.
•        The testimony – God’s self disclosure of how wonderful He has revealed Himself in such  grand way.  The 66 books of the Bible (Old and New Testament) all reveal truth about God to us so that we may know God personally and rest securely in His revelation of the truth.  His word is absolutely reliable and trustworthy.  (II Peter 1:20)
•        (Verse 8)  Statutes and precepts – God’s principles – God’s word is true.  His word guides us like a light that leads us down the right path of life (Psalms 119:105 and 119:d130).  The light shows us danger, pitfalls, and warns us so we can walk down the right path of life that brings joy to our hearts.
•        (Verse 8-9) Commands of the Lord – The word of God gives commands (not suggestions),  The commandments of the Lord are clear.  It enlightens the eyes. (Psalms 119:18), gives us understanding for our lives (Psalms 119f:98-99), makes us wise by giving us God’s wisdom to teach us God’s ways and God’s commandments to speak to our hearts (Isaiah 58:21, II Samuel 23:2), and live in our hearts.
•        (Verse 9) The fear of the Lord – Fear is another word for reverence, awe, worship.  The Bible is our manual on worship.  God is not to be worshiped as a graven image or some an idol.  He is to be worshiped as the God who is Spirit, who is eternal, who is the creator, sustainer, the one who is holy, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, and immutable.  Worship is very important.  When we worship we are giving all of the glory and praise to the one we love, because He first loved us.
•        Judgments – Scriptures as rendered by the great judge of all the earth from a divine bench.  It gives us God’s verdict on everything.  It is decisive and this word of God contains all of the divine verdicts on the human race as well as on angels who fell, and the devil too. (Revelation 20:10-13, 18)

This evidence of God’s word we are to believe/apply it to all areas of our lives.  Thy word I hid in my heart that I may not sin against God.  (Psalms 119:11)  We are to desire the word more than gold – much more than fine gold because it is sweeter than honey on the honeycomb.  Also, it is a warning to us.  To whom much is given, much is required (Luke 12:48)  To those who obey the word of God, there is great reward.  We should meditate on the Lord day and night.  The Lord is our strength and redeemer.

Prayer:  Our Father, it is good to know that You are real and that You have revealed Yourself to us through creation and also Your word.  We know that Your word is true and we have faith in You.  We now have peace, joy and hope for the future.  Without Your word we would be lost and confused about life.  Thank You for Your word that is setting us free to love You and serve You.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
