The Object of Our Faith

Scripture:  I Peter 1:21b – That your faith and hope might be in God.

Faith and hope are united/fused together links of the same chain.  They hold on to the fact that Christ was crucified, buried, and He rose again (I Corinthians 15:3-4 - For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.).  Our faith and hope must be in the triune God.  Faith is the substance of things hoped from, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1).  Hope, from the Webster Dictionary, is to look forward to with sure and reasonable confidence.  Hebrews 10:23 says “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful”.  Isaiah 40:31 says “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary they will walk and not be faint.”  Psalms 33:18 – “But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in Hs unfailing love.”  Psalms 130:5 says “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His Word I put my hope”.  Romans 8:24 says “For in the hope we were saved.  But hope that is seen is no hope at all.  Who hopes for what they already have?  Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”.

The object of our faith and hope should be in God – the triune God, i.e., God the Father, Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.  I Timothy 3:16 says “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
Our faith and hope should not be in ourselves or others, because our righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).  After all, as it says in Jeremiah 17:9  “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Prayer:  Dear Heavenly Father:  Thank You for showing me through your Word that my faith and hope is totally to be in You.  No matter what I am facing, help me to depend totally on You and not on my own understanding.  I know that You will direct my path (Proverbs 3:5-6).  All this I pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
