Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

When you are facing disappointment, illness/suffering or persecution that threatens you with bouts of discouragement or depression, how do you find the strength or power to persevere or not succumb to being bitter or to lose heart? Paul’s answer is found in II Corinthians 4:16-18. II Corinthians 4:16 says “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward an is being renewed day by day.” The “outward man” is our physical body, which is decaying and will eventually die. Paul was referring to the normal aging process. Also, he wore himself out in ministry, plus he suffered beatings and attacks from his enemies. On the other hand, the “inward man” is being renewed day by day. The inward man is the eternal part of each believer. Ephesians 4:23-24 says “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and holiness. Colossians 3:10 says “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. While Paul was becoming “physically” weak and was under attack by his enemies, he experienced “spiritual” growth/success (Hebrews 11:32-45). From the moment you are born, your body is in a slow process of aging until you take your final breath on earth. If you are only aware and thinking about how much you are decaying physically as you age, you can get bitter/discouraged. When you realize and appreciate how much you are being transformed internally/eternally, you can rest and be joyous -- seeing things with the Lord’s perspective. I can remember visiting family/friends in the hospital who were on their death bed that I wanted to encourage. After our visit, I realized that they encouraged me so much. I could sense that they were resting, trusting in the Lord, and they were not focusing on their illness. That’s so amazing to me!

II Corinthians 4:17 says “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” Our most extreme difficulties in this life, which may be unbearable at times are light and short-lived compared to the heavy-weighted rewards that will last forever in eternity! Wow! Can you even imagine that truth!
II Corinthians 4:18 says “While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things that are not seen are eternal.” I’m asking the Lord to help me look past what is temporary/perishing (the things of this world), and look/focus on things that are not seen (that are eternal). Pursuing, seeking, focusing on the Lord Jesus Christ consistently reading/studying God’s word, and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ should be so important to us as believers.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: As I am aging, help me to keep my focus on You – and not lose heart. Just as I need food for my physical body, help me to continue to desire food for my soul (the precious word of God -- the Bible). All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.” The question in I Corinthians 1:20 is “Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age?” God is always smarter than man. Everything that man has, God has given to him. Pride of the heart always causes man to think he knows everything apart from God. Jeremiah 9:23-24 says “Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.”

To have a personal relationship with Christ, you must believe the message of the cross – Christ crucified. II Corinthians 2:4 says “For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you. ”The message of the cross never changes. People change, nations, change, but the message of the cross should never be watered down or compromised. It remains the same forever. John 14:6 says “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Aren’t you glad that you believe the message of the cross! Ephesians 1:13 – “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” Romans 10:3 - For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” Where would we be without the message of the cross? Colossians 1:13-14 – “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.” All of our sins were paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. Our past, present, and future sins were nailed to the cross. Now we are free to live for Him, serve Him, and love Him and others!
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank you for dying on the cross for our sins. The message of the cross is transforming my life. Now I am free to live for You. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. When we give the devil a foothold into our lives, he takes a stronghold. If you give Satan control of a small part of your life, he will soon try to take over more and more of your life. Ephesians 4:26b-27 gives the best way to deal with our negative emotions. We have to make a choice to confess our sins right away.

I saw a You Tube video of two gazelles who were so busy locking horns/fighting with each other. Really far in the distance was a lion who was steadily/quickly approaching the gazelles. They didn’t notice the lion, because they were aggressively fighting each other. Unfortunately, the lion devoured one of the gazelles, and the other one I am sure was terrified. I posted the You Tube video on my Facebook page. That’s the way it is with some Christians sometimes -- so involved in fighting their sisters and brothers in Christ that they don’t notice their real enemy (the devil) approaching them to devour or cripple them. Remember Ephesians 6:12 says “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against the spiritual host of wickedness in the heavenly places.” I Peter 5:8 says “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.”

My desire/choice is to quickly/immediately deal with my negative emotions so that they will not become strongholds in my life – by confessing my sins to the Lord and turning away from them.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Help me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to make right choices; but when I sin and/or have negative emotions, help me to confess it right away -- and not give place to the devil so that he will not have a foothold/stronghold (further advancement in my life). All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

Luke in the book of Acts used the term for unmovable to describe Paul being shipwrecked in Acts 27:41. Acts 27:41 says “And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.” Paul said that he experienced all kinds of trouble and challenges of this life. He said nothing would move him or stop him from finishing His work in the ministry. Matthew 20:28 – “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” We are to ask God to strengthen us as we serve Him. Nehemiah 6:9 - For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. Hebrews 6:10 - For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

Although we may not immediately see the reward for our good doings, they will come in God’s timing. Do not give up. Keep pressing on by faith and confidence in God.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Help us to serve You with our whole heart as to the Lord and not unto men as it says in Colossians 3:23. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

Paul was rejoicing that the Philippians, when he left Macedonia and Thessalonica, had sent him provisions to meet his needs (Philippians 4:15-16)! They gave sacrificially. The Philippians gave to Paul even though they had so little, because they were spiritually invested in the gospel and the ministry that Paul was doing in Rome. They believed in Paul’s mission, and they heard about the fruit of it.

Philippians 4:11-13 says “Not that I speak in regard to want, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” We have to have the ability, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to “make do” in all kinds of situations or circumstances – whether we are rich or poor, or if everything is going along the way we want. From Philippians 4:19, Paul isn’t saying that Christians will never go hungry or suffer, or that God will always protect us from danger. Paul, many other martyrs, and numerous Christians have experienced extreme hardships as a result of serving the Lord Jesus Christ. As Christians, God will enable us to bear burdens, trials, disappointments, and losses. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank you for giving me strength to bear up under whatever You allow or cause in my life. Whew! Forgive me when I am not content in my faith walk with You. Whatever I am facing, help me to learn and grow closer to You. You have promised that what You have started, You will finish in me (Philippians 1:6). You have promised that You will never leave or forsake me. You have promised that You will not put on me more than I can bear. I trust You. All this I pray in Jesus’ name.

(by Marsha Williams)

This has affected communities, our families and our very way of life. Many people don’t have sufficient income to endure this crucial unexpected outbreak. The Lord is truly getting everyone’s attention – whether they are Christians or not. At this time, it is so important that we constantly wash our hands (which we should have always been doing), and practice social distancing to slow down the spread of this highly contagious virus. It is my prayer that those not saved will invite Jesus Christ their lives, and those who are saved, will draw closer to the Lord. It’s a time of self-examination for sure.
II Chronicles 7:14b says “For my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

We are to number our days – realizing that time as we know it is short/running out. Just think – the Lord could return very soon. It is time to really think about what is really important in our lives. As Pastor Cockrell has said many times – we should be policing our minds. We should think about what we thinking about. What is the seed motivation for what we do? What are our priorities in life right now? Are we keeping a short account of sins? Is Jesus really our first priority? When we are thinking about something that doesn’t please the Lord, we have to learn to stop the recorder in our mind. Philippians 4:8 says “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Are you really praying and asking the Lord to direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6)? Or do you live your life any way you feel like it? I am learning that there are some things I have to do. There are some things I want to do. There are some things I just can do. I have to see things according to the Lord’s perspective.

While there are many things we can’t do right now, there are many things we can do and should be faithfully doing. We should be spending as much time as we can with our family within our homes, and also communicating with our family/friends who are not in our homes. We should be encouraging/helpful – being sensitive to what others are encountering. We should be keeping our minds stayed on Jesus so that we can have perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3). Do you believe that God has everything in control? We should be reading/studying the Word. We should never lose hope or give up, because the Lord is our refuge. Psalms 62:5-8 says My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved. 7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. 8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. The Lord has promised that He will be with us. He will never leave us (Matthew 28:20)!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank You for being my Savior and Lord, and my refuge and strength! With all of the responsibilities and things on my mind, help me to keep You as the number one priority – numbering my days and directing my path. All this I pray in Jesus’ name.

(by Marsha Williams)

Some of those times were: when I had several operations to remove precancerous cells; when my son, Shaun, was killed; when a close friend of my family, Michelle Wilson, committed suicide; when I kept getting shingles, and now I have to take shingles meds for the rest of my life; when my parents passed less than six weeks a part; when my sister, Andrea, had to have surgery to remove cancerous tumors, and had to have several discs in her neck removed; and when my mother-in-law, Victoria Shepherd passed. If it wasn’t for me having a personal relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ – and therefore the Holy Spring strengthening me during those times of discouragement, testing, fear, stress/pain, I probably would have had a nervous breakdown -- especially when my son, Shaun, was killed. We never know what we will be facing regarding trials, but I know the Lord will see us through. God is my all in all!!

God Is (by Walter Hawkins):
God is my protection.
God is my all in all.
God is my light in darkness.
God is my all in all.
God is my today and tomorrow.
God is my all in all
God is my joy in times of sorrow.
God is my all in all.
God is the joy and the strength of my life.
He moves all pain, misery, and strife.
He promised to keep me – never to leave me.
Never, never come short of His Word.
I’ve got to fast and pray – stay in the narrow way
Keep my life clean every day
I want to go with Him when He comes back.
I’ve come too far, and I’ll never turn back.
God is, God is, God is, God is.
God is my all in all!!!!! \o//

When the Israelites passed through the Red Sea, they said “The Lord is my strength and my song (Exodus 15:2). Psalms 27:1 says “the Lord is my light and my salvation. But if you do not worship, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?”16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”
Can you imagine depending on the Lord to the point of having to be put in a burning/fiery furnace for not obeying a worldly king? What a model/example Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego are for us about depending/trusting in God – the one true God! What would you do if you were in that exact situation?

As believers, we know that God is able to deliver us. Romans five tells us that God may allow trials and difficult circumstances in our lives to strengthen our faith, or build our character. Sometimes I don’t understand the purpose of my trials, but I am learning to trust the Lord in the midst of the trials – even when the trials are extremely difficult. Job, who suffered in many different ways, was still able to say “Though He may slay me, yet will I hope (depend/trust) Him (Job 13:15), God does not always guarantee that we will never suffer, but He promises to be with us (Isaiah 43:2, Hebrews 13:5b). In times of trials, our attitude should be like Meshach, Shadrach and Abed-Nego. As we consistently depend on the Lord in circumstances, when we have to deal with an enormous/difficult trial, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we can have victory! Jesus Himself said “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but can’t kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28). Even if Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego thought they had to suffer by burning to a crisp in the furnace, they would have refused to worship an idol. Many believers over the centuries have depended on God and were martyrs.

What a testimony! Even if we depend on the Lord, and as a result die from taking a stand the for Lord, as Christians we will be with the Lord for eternity!!! Our hope and encouragement in dealing with persecution, illness or pain in this life is knowing that this life is not the end!!! There is life after death. Eternal life is a promise, which enables us to live above pain, suffering and persecution – as we are depending on the Lord (John 3:16, Romans 8:18)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: We don’t know what we will experience in this life, but we know that you are with us. Help us to always depend on You. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

Can you relate to how they felt? Have you ever gotten discouraged as you waited on the Lord for something for many years? One minute you felt encouraged, and the next minute you doubted what the Lord would do. Isaiah 40:29-31 says “ He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” God sent Hagai and Zechariah to encourage the workers – and the temple was finally rebuilt and used by the Lord Jesus Christ! The ultimate example of perseverance was when Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross for our sins. We can’t even imagine all that the Lord went through as His life was sacrificed for us. Let us follow His example by presenting our body as a living sacrifice and not being conformed to this world. Romans 12:1-2 says “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Instead of viewing problems as obstacles or getting discouraged, we should use them as opportunities to praise God -- who works all things out for our good. Romans 8:28 says “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” While discouragement and worrying drains us, perseverance and praising the Lord encourages us!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank You for Your ultimate example of perseverance as you died on the cross for our sins. Help us to keep our eyes stayed on You, and never give up no matter what we are facing. Help us to rest in Your promises, and help us to praise and worship you in the midst of whatever we are dealing with. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

I am still taking pain medication, but I’m taking it less often. I have an appointment to see the cardiologist in three months. Thank you Lord!! You are my Jehovah Rophe!!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank you Lord for the things that I have learned while going through this illness/trial. Thank you so much for turning my sadness into rejoicing!!! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

When we have inappropriate thoughts, we have to not dwell on them. II Corinthians 10:5 says – Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. The renewed mind is one that is saturated by the word of God. Colossians 3:16a says – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom… There is no way you can grow in the things of the Lord without reading/studying/applying the word of God. Today, unfortunately, many Christians neglect reading God’s word on a daily basis.

When you meditate on God’s word, your mind will be renewed. Therefore, you will recognize the perfect will of God. You will discern God’s will, because you will see things according to the Lord’s perspective. We have to set our minds on things above – not on things that are on the earth (Colossians 3:2). Psalms 119:11 says – I have stored up Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank you for making us new creations in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit within us. Help us to not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. When we have inappropriate thoughts, help us not to dwell on those thoughts. We want to be able to discern Your perfect will in our lives. I pray that our lifestyles will reflect us seeing things according to Your perspective. In Jesus’ name I pray.

(Matthews 22:37 says Jesus said unto him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all you soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. Matthews 22:39 says And the second is like unto it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.) The heart of this verse is to ”guard our hearts” so that what flows out of our hearts is love for God and others – not hatred or evil toward others.

Oher key things I am learning about ”guarding our hearts” are:

• We must guard our hearts and apply the truths and instructions from the Bible. They drastically change our lives (John 3:16, II Timothy 3:16, Hebrews 4:12).
• When our hearts are saturated with His truths and love, His love will flow from our hearts – through the Holy Spirit illuminating scriptures. (On the other hand, if we have lies/foolishness in our hearts, our lives will be sinful (Psalms 14:1). (Jeremiah 17:9 says The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? )
• As Christians, we must have God’s word in our hearts so that we can live lives that are glorifying/pleasing to the Lord.

In Proverbs 4:24, we are warned about guarding our speech. In Proverbs 4:25, we are warned to guard our eyes. In Proverbs 4:26, we are warned to use our minds wisely. In Proverbs 4:27, we are told to stay away from evil. All of these warnings stem from Proverbs 4:23 where we are told to “guard our hearts”.

The chorus of a song that I love by Babbie Mason entitled With All My Heart says: With all my heart I want to love You Lord, and live my life each day to know You more. All that is in me is Yours completely. I’ll serve You only with all my heart.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Please help us to “guard our hearts” with all diligence. We want to live a life that is well pleasing to You. It is important to surrender our ways for the Lord’s ways Have you totally surrendered your will to God’s will? Most of His will is already stated and mentioned over and over again in the Bible. For instance, it is clearly God’s will that people live a sanctified/set apart life and abstain from fornication. .I Thessalonians 4:3-5a says “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;” We shouldn’t be conformed to what the world does, but we should be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Keep in mind that Jesus was willing to die for us; therefore, we should be willing to live for Him in a way that is well pleasing to Him. I John 3:22 says “ And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.” Ephesians 5:8-10 says “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth; 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.”

To aid in finding out God’s will and surrendering to His will, it is also helpful to seek godly counsel, advisors, mentors, in our lives (Proverbs 11:14). They can be instrumental in helping us to figure out God’s will for us, but it is up to us to surrender our will to God’s plans.
To know and surrender to God’s will, think about how God has wired/gifted you. From the Purpose Driven Life book, it talks about how we should know our shape:

(S) Spiritual gifts (I Corinthians 12:18
(H) Heart (Proverbs 4:23)
(A) Abilities (I Peter 4:11)
(P) Personality (I Corinthians 12:6
(E ) Experience (Romans 8:23)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Help me to totally surrender to Your will in my life. I want to do what pleases You. Open doors if what I am praying for is Your will, and close doors if what I desire is not Your will for me. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

I love to give family/friends gifts, but I don’t wait until Christmas to do so. What’s more important to me is to appreciate the best gift ever – the indescribable gift – JESUS CHRIST!!! Just thinking about how I have a personal relationship with the Lord, brings me joy – despite the trials and challenges I am facing. Let’s remember to keep our focus on the Lord and not get distracted by the cares of this life. For many people this time of the year is gloomy and/or discouraging because of the loss of loved ones, loneliness, or the lack of employment. Help me Lord to be of encouragement to someone. It is good to know that the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ concerning you.” In circumstances when I am not sure what the Lord has for me, I am learning to pray “Lord if what I am requesting is Your will for me, please open the door. On the other hand, if I am desiring or requesting what is not Your will for me, please close the door.” That’s so much better than praying amiss.

In order for us to know God’s will for us, we must first have a personal relationship with God by inviting Jesus Christ into our lives (Romans 10:9-10, John 3:16).. When a person gets saved (be forgiven of his/her sins), that person receives the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 12:13) – who guides and leads him/her – directs his/her path. I am so glad that once saved always saved! Ephesians 4:29-30 says “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” After we have invited Jesus Christ into our lives, we have to cultivate our fellowship with Him. We must seek to know Him more and more and not just know about Him. We have to spend time with Him in the Word and in prayer (II Timothy 2:15). When we consistently seek these disciplines in our lives, God’s will/purpose will begin to be revealed to us (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank You for saving me, and for promising that you will never leave or forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:6). Please give me discernment/wisdom concerning your will for me. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen

(by Marsha Williams)

She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. 14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

I Thessalonians 4:13-14 – But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not even as others which have no hope. For if we believer that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.

In John 20:1-16 we see that Mary Magdalene’s sorrow, pain, discouragement/sadness, was turned to joy! Can you imagine how she felt when she came to the tomb – so burdened down and weeping because Jesus Christ had been unmercifully crucified. He was not in the tomb when she arrived, and the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she saw Simon Peter and John, who Jesus loved. Mary asked them where was Jesus and/or where had someone moved Him? She probably felt so hopeless and confused. An angel and Jesus asked Mary a question. “Woman, why are you weeping?” As distraught as Mary felt, her weeping later was turned to joy!! At first, she really didn’t realize that Jesus actually was going to be resurrected. Her countenance was then lifted! It is nothing wrong with crying. After all, Jesus wept.

When we are at our darkest times, it is as if Jesus is asking us the same question – Why are you weeping or why is your joy being held back? Pain, sorrow and weeping are real. Have you ever hurt so much that you thought you would never get over what you were grieving about? There have been times when I felt like what I was going through was the end of the world. For some people, what is overwhelming is the death/loss of a family member or a close friend. For some, it seems as if they will never recover from the pain of health issues, the loss of opportunities – something they wanted to occur in their lives but it didn’t happen. Our painful situations are real, but as we cry out to the Lord, He can and will heal our hearts as time goes by. Everyone grieves differently. The Lord is very near to those who trust and obey Him. It is amazing how the Lord can make the intensity of our pain subside or dissipate. He has promised that He will never leave or forsake us. He will comfort us and see us through whatever we are facing. No matter what we are facing, we can have hope, peace, joy, and be consoled. What an awesome God we serve!!! The Lord knows what we are going through, and He cares about the intricate details of our lives.

Prayer: Thank You Lord Jesus for helping me in my darkened times of sadness, weeping, and despair, to be turned to joy, and comfort! I pray that we will always allow You to turn our weeping into joy. I’m so grateful that the joy (that You give us) is our strength! (Nehemiah 8:10) Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

An example of how circumstances can change when being in God’s presence is found in Acts 16:25-31. Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises/worshiped God while in prison. Then there was an earthquake, and suddenly all of the doors were opened and everyone’s bands were loosed. The guard of the prison was so afraid, and he was going to kill himself when he realized the prison doors were opened. After all, he was responsible for making sure the prisoners did not escape. Paul told the guard not to harm/kill himself because Paul/Silas and others were still there. The guard then asked how could he be saved. Paul told the guard that he could be saved by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ! The guard and his family were saved because they believed on Jesus the Christ!

On the other hand, when we are going through a lot, and we start worshiping God/being in His presence, our circumstance may not change – but our perspective can change. At any rate, things change in His presence. When you worship the Lord, your heart will get fixed on Him, and in your situation you can say it is well with my soul. In worship, your attention will be on the Lord, and you will be delivered – whether your situation changes or not. In your trials, God reveals to us who He is, and He gives us assurance that we can trust Him no matter what we go through. God is sovereign and has power to deliver us and/or give us enabling grace to go through as it says in II Corinthians 12:9-10 – “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”
.
I will never forget how years ago my mother was very ill. She had a heart disease and diabetes. At first her doctor said that she may have to get her leg amputated, but she ended up getting several toes amputated. She stayed with Robert and I for a while. My mother loved the Lord with all her heart. She spent many hours per day in the Lord’s presence – praying, reading the Bible, singing, praise/worshiping God. The only cd she listened to over and over again was CeCe Winans’ Throne Room. That cd really ministered to her. Joy, peace and comfort truly comes from trusting, adoring the Lord and being in His presence. When flowers bloom, they bloom in the direction of the sun. We bloom/open up and are set free when we orient ourselves to the Son of God – Jesus the Christ. We have to place ourselves in the right direction/path – keeping an upward focus on the Lord in order to sense His presence.

We should delight in God because of who He is and what He has done. Intimacy and freedom in worship is about a life of sacrifice and spending a lot of time in prayer. You have to choose this day whom you will serve. We have to choose each day who you will worship, praise/obey… (Joshua 24:15) Don’t wait until Sunday at church to worship God. It is a lifestyle. (Romans 12:1-2) Your attitude, motive, and your character will change in His presence. It is not how much you know, but how much you choose to surrender, yield to the power of the Holy Spirit. It is about spending a lot of quality time intentionally (on purpose) with the Lord. When we spend a lot of time with the Lord in His presence, we will have high expectations and look forward to our alone time encounters with Him. God is after us totally being changed by Him. Our changed life will be noticeable to those around us. The Holy Spirit is the one who change/transforms our lives. When we invite Jesus Christ into our lives, we receive the Holy Spirit –we are placed into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:13). We have access to the Lord at any time. The Holy Spirit allows us to be close to the Lord.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank You for making Yourself so real to us. We couldn’t make it without You in our lives. Help us to draw nearer to You. We want our transformed lives to help and affect others around us. We praise Your name forever. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

In worship, we are to offer our bodies a living sacrifice. We usually associate this concept of sacrifice with something dead, but God wants us to be a living sacrifice. He wants us to live for Him. Worship is a lifestyle. Real worship involves what Romans 12:1-2 says: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”. People are inclined to worship something – as they try to fill the void in their lives. The void in a person’s life can only be filled when a person invites Jesus Christ into his/her life. When we worship God, He looks past our words and sees the attitude of our hearts as it says in I Samuel 16:7 - “But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”

It takes effort to praise/worship God. When you praise God when you don’t feel like it, or when you are tired, or disappointed, you are offering a sacrifice of worship to God. Worship is not about the songs you sing, but the life you live. Worship or being in the Lord’s presence is not about you hearing your favorite singers sing your favorite songs. Psalms16:11 - “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Our focus should be on Jesus, reading/studying God’s Word, and following the Lord’s lead. What we do collectively in worship at church should be an overflow of what we are doing individually and daily at home. We should come together unashamed. Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. We should have freedom from guilt, shame, worry.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: I’m so grateful that I have a personal relationship with You. Thank You Jesus for dying on the cross for my sins. I look forward to daily being in Your presence as I set aside time to be alone with You in prayer, praise/worship, reading/meditating on your Word. You deserve all the glory, honor, and praise. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)

(Titus 1:15, Ephesians 4:17) Our minds were blinded. We were dead in trespasses and sin. Now that we are forgiven of our sin -- having a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, we have to learn to respond differently by yielding/surrenderinEg to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has quickened our spirit, and we should be allowing the Holy Spirit to lead our lives and/or renew our minds. The soul (mind, will, and emotions) and our body (fleshly desires) should not be leading us anymore. There is a struggle/spiritual warfare going on (Romans 7:15-25), but we are new creations in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17)!!

God’s part in renewing our minds:
• The Holy Spirit guides us in all truth, which helps to renew our minds. John 16:13 says However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
• The Word of God (the Bible) gives us the truth, which helps to renew our minds. Psalms 119:105 says Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalms 119:11 says Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.
• God gives us wisdom if we ask for it. James 1:5 says If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
• God gives us power and self discipline. ( II Timothy 1:7 - For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.)
Our part in renewing our minds:
God definitely does His part in our minds being renewed, but we have a responsibility in our minds being renewed. You can’t stop negative/sinful thoughts from coming on your mind, but we have to deal with them when they enter our minds. We have to learn to not dwell on the negative/sinful thoughts and think on what is right/godly.
• II Corinthians 10:5 – casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
• Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
• It is important that I daily read/meditate on the word of God.I have to remind myself that what I feed will grow, and what I starve will die. I can read the word of God and pray a lot, but if I don’t purpose in my heart to apply the word of God to my life, my mind won’t be renewed. The following scriptures in the book of Romans are promises to help us to renew our minds: (Romans 8:1-2 - There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:11 - But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:26 - Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:37 - Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:38-39 - For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank Your for forgiving me of my sin, giving me Your Holy Spirit to guide/direct me. Thank You for Your word, the Bible, which leads me to all truth, and thank You for the privilege to pray to You. You have given us all that we need to be victorious even in renewing our minds. I will, by Your power, yield to the Holy Spirit and surrender dwelling on negative/sinful thoughts. In Jesus’ name, I pray.

(by Marsha Williams)

Scripture: Psalms 16:11 - Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. .Isaiah 43:2 - When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. I Peter 5:6-7 - Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you.

We all go through seasons/periods of darkness – whether it is: disappointments, failures, pain, regret, emotional drama/turmoil, fear, sorrow, rejection, isolation, confusion, or feeling forsaken or alone. There are treasures in our dark hidden places. God is light, and He knows everything about our circumstances, and about how we handle what we go through. He is very aware of where we are in our walk with Him. He knows what it will take for us to trust/depend on Him even more than we do now. God has a purpose for everything we go through. Our dark seasons are never a waste. As we trust the Lord while in our dark seasons, we will grow/develop in the things of the Lord, and we will see things with a new perspective. He wants us to believe, rely, depend, cry out to Him and seek His face even more than we have been. We have to read/study and meditate on the word of God to change our thought patterns or way of thinking. The word of God has to be in the forefront of our minds. Philippians 4:8 says “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Romans 8:28 says “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” When a photographer takes a picture, and then he starts developing it, if light shines on it too early, the picture will not turn out right. God has to let us go through our dark seasons until we see things with a different/new perspective – until we develop/mature even more.

When we go through dark seasons in our lives, we may feel like nobody knows how we feel or can understand what we are going through. Hebrews 4:15 says “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Think about all that the Lord went through. He was crucified on the cross – which is the worst/horrendous death of all. The weight of all of our sins were placed on Him. He knows what we are going through, and He has promised that He will see/carry us through our dark seasons. This reminds me of part of a hymn which says: Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin. Each victory will help you, some other to win. Fight manfully onward. Dark passion subdue. Look ever to Jesus. He will carry you through. You just ask the Savior to help you, comfort, strengthen and keep you. He is willing to aid you. He will carry you through. Psalms 23:4 says “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Jesus is with us, and He has promised that He will never leave leave/forsake us. (Joshua 1:9, Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 28:20)

If you are currently in a dark season in your life, I encourage you to not give up. Continue to pray and pursue the Lord and seek His face and cry out to the Lord, worship/praise the Lord and stay in His Word. Make sure you have regular/specific times to be alone with the Lord. In Exodus 33, Moses set up a tent called the “tent of meeting” outside of the camp where the Israelites were, so that he could be alone with God. God no longer dealt with the Israelites within the camp because of their involvement with idolatry. Moses, on the other hand, wasn’t satisfied with a casual relationship/fellowship with God. Therefore, God blessed Moses with His glory/presence. Psalms 16:11 says “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak to Moses. Now that we are in the New Covenant, all Christians have access to what Moses had!!! Having a deeper/closer walk with the Lord is not limited to a chosen few Christians. Unfortunately, sacred secrets/treasures while in dark seasons of our lives will not be found by all Christians – only those who diligently seek the Lord -- those who take time to pursue the Lord and draw near to Him, and also to those who are willing to turn away from their sins -- idolatry, pride, arrogance. As we choose to spend time praying/talking to the Lord, we have to also spend a lot of time allowing the Lord to speak to us through His Word. II Corinthians 1:4 says “Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” As the Lord comforts us while we are in our dark seasons, we will be able to comfort others who are in their dark seasons.
What’s your choice -- a deeper/intimate fellowship with the Lord or a casual one? We have to remember that we have to be committed to the “process” of having a closer walk with the Lord. We are equipped, by the power of the Holy Spirit, for this journey!!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father: Thank You so much for helping me to see treasures – things according to Your perspective when I have been in dark seasons of my life. Thank You for assuring me that no matter what I go through, You have promised that You will never leave nor forsake me. You will always carry me through and/or give me enabling grace to go on. I am trusting in You. I know that You love me and that You will carry me through. All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

(by Marsha Williams)
